Without the noise of earnings reports or policy meetings, two of the biggest economic forces took the main stage this week: workers and climate. The two main economic value creators demonstrated their power to inflict damage if leaders continue to deprioritize them over short-term profit maximization. Mirroring the widespread worker strikes across the entertainment and auto industries at this time last year, shipping and manufacturing workers halted operations at America’s biggest manufacturer, Boeing, and every major shipping port along the US East and Gulf Coast. Hurricane Helene added to the disruption, devastating much of the southeast US and destroying homes, businesses, and transportation routes. This week's events highlight the scale of repercussions our economy will continue to face if we don’t realign our business priorities to support the people and planet that make the economy possible.
