🌎 The Big Picture

If you haven’t heard, President Trump escalated the global trade war this week, launching metaphorical economic missiles at every other nation in the world, even uninhabited islands. The penguins have not been buying enough American products.

The market tanked on Thursday after President Trump announced steep tariffs on nearly all imported goods. It was the worst day for the market since 2020, and the S&P 500 is now down 12% from its record high just six weeks ago.

The announced measures were worse than many were expecting, and the approach to the policies implied that these would not be final numbers. Major nations vowed retaliation, which could drive global prices higher and make it more difficult for American companies to compete abroad.

Investors hoped this announcement would clear up some uncertainty and help businesses move forward with hiring, spending, and investment plans. However, this only solidified the expectation for short-term economic pain and more uncertainty.

On top of that, business activity seems to be slowing, layoff announcements are climbing, and the AI boom is showing signs of losing steam. The enthusiasm for the billions that corporations were spending on AI has been the main thing fueling the stock market for the past couple of years. Now, there are signs that big spenders like Microsoft are cutting back.

There’s not much to get excited about.
