🌎 The Big Picture
All the data shows that the economy has been pretty solid. America’s biggest businesses are reporting good profits. The job market remains surprisingly steady, with fewer layoffs than expected and wages slowly regaining purchasing power. Americans spent more in March, especially on big-ticket items like cars, suggesting some confidence in household budgets.
But the swings in policy are creating warning signs. New tariffs are already straining small businesses and housing construction. Consumer sentiment is plummeting, inflation expectations are rising fast, and policymakers may be unable to step in if trade shocks drag the economy down.
It’s not just the tariff reversals that are creating issues. This week, the Department of Education published and retracted a controversial student loan policy within about three days after receiving a ton of pushback. The positive? They’re being responsive. But the government serving 300 million people isn’t really built for a trial-and-error strategy.
A couple more critical thoughts from the week:
Tariff realities:
Here's a perfect example of how indiscriminate tariffs don't always increase US manufacturing and can hurt US companies:
A major US aluminum producer won't be able to bring more of its manufacturing to the US and now faces higher costs due to the tariffs.
In Alcoa's recent financial report:
“In 2024, the US imported approximately 4.2 million metric tons of primary aluminum, with imports of Canadian aluminum representing approximately 70% or 2.9 million metric tons.
The four operating smelters in the US produce 700,000 metric tons of aluminum each year.
If all smelting capacity in the US would restart, which is approximately 600,000 metric tons, the US would still be short by 3.6 million metric tons. ⚠️
It takes many years to build a new smelter, and at least five to six smelters would be required to address the US demand for primary aluminum. ⚠️
These new smelters would require additional energy production equivalent to almost seven new nuclear reactors or more than 10 Hoover dams. ⚠️
Until additional smelting capacity is built in the US, the most efficient aluminum supply chain is Canadian aluminum going into the US."

🏭 The Companies Everyone’s Talking About
![]() Alphabet Inc 👍 67% 👥 53% | 🌏 55% | 💰 61% | Google Monopoly Google has illegally monopolized online advertising technology used by websites to manage their ads and the exchanges where advertisers and publishers connect, harming rivals, customers, and consumers, a US judge ruled. This is the second time in a year that a court has ruled the tech giant to be an illegal monopolist, opening the door for the government to potentially force Google to sell off parts of its massive advertising business to foster more competition. |
![]() Eli Lilly and Co 👍 57% 👥 51% | 🌏 49% | 💰 53% | Weight Loss Breakthrough Eli Lilly has announced positive results for its weight loss pill, orforglipron, in a key trial involving patients with Type 2 diabetes. The daily pill not only helped lower blood sugar levels but also led to significant weight loss, averaging nearly 8% over 40 weeks. The drugmaker is now one step closer to a new, needle-free alternative that would provide a competitive edge in the booming weight loss and diabetes market. |
![]() BP PLC 👍 56% 👥 51% | 🌏 46% | 💰 52% | Gulf Discovery BP announces an oil discovery at the Far South prospect in the deepwater US Gulf of America, with preliminary data supporting a potentially commercial volume of hydrocarbons. The energy giant has focused on oil exploration and strengthening its upstream portfolio to deliver more affordable and reliable energy. |
![]() Boeing 👍 27% 👥 42% | 🌏 42% | 💰 44% | Trade War Casualty China has ordered its airlines to stop taking deliveries of Boeing jets and to halt purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from US companies, as part of the ongoing trade war between the US and China. This move is a significant setback for Boeing, which relies heavily on the Chinese market, and could impact the company's sales and supply chains, with China forecast to make up 20% of global aircraft demand over the next two decades. |
![]() General Motors 👍 63% 👥 53% | 🌏 53% | 💰 53% | Production Halt General Motors is suspending production and laying off 500 workers at its electric vehicle plant in Ontario due to weak demand for its BrightDrop electric delivery van, with the plant operating a single shift when production resumes in May. The decision is a significant setback for the company's electric vehicle ambitions and highlights the challenges facing the automotive industry in Canada amidst trade policy uncertainty and market demand fluctuations. |
