🌎 The Big Picture
It was a relatively slow week on the economic front, especially with markets closed on Thursday. The main headlines have focused on Israel and Iran, but the war there doesn’t yet present any major impacts on the US economy. Every conflict in the Middle East raises concerns about oil prices climbing, but prices haven’t climbed much because there’s a sufficient oil supply around the world, and the US is pretty self-sufficient at this point.
Beyond that, the economy keeps showing incremental signs of slowing. Employers are hiring less, young job seekers are struggling in particular, and consumer spending dropped for the second month in a row, raising fresh concerns about consumer demand, housing, and manufacturing.
Don’t expect borrowing costs to come down dramatically anytime soon. The Federal Reserve is still in wait-and-see mode. Everyone’s wondering when this cloud of uncertainty will clear enough to allow people to make easier decisions.
