🌎 The Big Picture
This week shook everyone’s expectations for next year. The Federal Reserve doesn’t expect to lower borrowing costs very quickly. Congress isn’t inspiring confidence in its ability to quickly execute on all of the policies that drove the post-election economic optimism.
Layoffs stayed low, home sales rose, and Americans kept spending despite high prices, helping the economy end the year strong. However, a potential government shutdown looms, mortgages remain expensive, and rising insurance costs and climate-driven cocoa shortages are squeezing budgets.
