Markets fell from record highs after disappointing news on the labor market. ADP's initial report on private-sector jobs showed a slowdown in hiring, with only half as many people getting back to work in July as expected. Economists so far point to pandemic-related reasons over the additional unemployment benefits.

Earnings, aka profits, can be looked at in different ways. You might see that a company "beat on EPS (Earnings Per Share)" but still overall lost money. That's because companies can report on as many numbers as they want and present them, including or excluding certain factors. If their costs outweigh their revenues, they're losing money overall. If they think certain costs are outside of their control or something, like taxes or interest costs on debt, they might choose to report a separate number in which they pull out some of those costs or adjust it in other special accounting ways. We get to see both numbers, but they can tell us they're focused on improving this number that's special for them.
