Markets drifted to a new 2022 low today
as investors worried about worsening global financial conditions.
The US Dollar is stronger than it's been in decades
,
but it's not necessarily a good thing
. Though inflation in the US is high and the economy is slowing, conditions are relatively better than in other major international economies. High interest rates in the US have started attracting international investors. A strong dollar is great for spending on goods abroad, but it makes US goods more expensive to the world, hurting corporate sales. Also, much of the world's economy is tied to the US dollar, so rapid value changes can destabilize financial conditions.
The British pound hit a new record low against the dollar today
, approaching 1:1 parity after the UK government cut taxes to stimulate growth despite inflation at nearly 10%.
Rent and oil, two key drivers of inflation, are cooling off.
Rent prices declined last month for the first time in nearly two years
, according to property data company CoStar Group and other online rental platforms. Rents are down from record highs.
Oil prices have continued to decline, reaching the lowest levels since January.

🤓 Inside Scoop...
When companies need extra cash to invest in their business, they can sell shares in their company (
stock
) or take on
debt
. That debt can be regular loans from banks, revolving credit facilities like a corporate credit card, or
bonds
. When companies issue bonds to the public market, they borrow from several investors at once. Each bond is like a tiny loan they have to pay interest on.
Green bonds
are a special kind of bond in which the company can only use the money for sustainable projects like renewable energy, waste reduction, or conservation. Green bonds are a relatively new type of financing that often come with better tax treatment or lower rates to incentivize
sustainable investment.
