Big Picture

  1. Consumers are less worried about prolonged inflation.

  2. Investors are focused on the August inflation report tomorrow.

  3. Ukraine's counterassault inflicted a major defeat on Russia over the weekend.

Investors carried the positive market momentum from Friday, feeling optimistic about declining inflation and Ukraine's military success against Russia.

Consumers are less worried about prolonged inflation.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's August consumer survey indicated a steep decline in inflation expectations going out one and three years. Consumers only expect prices to rise 5.7% over the next twelve months, down from 6.2% in July.

Inflation expectations are critical drivers of actual inflation.

If businesses think costs will rise, they'll keep raising their prices. If consumers believe things will get more expensive, they'll buy more now, increasing demand. All eyes will be on the official August inflation report coming out tomorrow.

Ukraine's military counterassault against Russia achieved massive success over the weekend

, recapturing critical territory and dealing Russia its biggest defeat since it failed to capture Kyiv. Russia still has a bigger army, but

Ukraine's campaign over the last two weeks has marked a significant shift

in momentum and sentiment analysts say could shift the tide towards reconciliation.

🤓 Inside Scoop...

Green hydrogen

, also called

renewable hydrogen

, is one of the most exciting potential alternatives to fossil fuels for energy production. Hydrogen, a colorless gas, is the most abundant element in the universe. It can be cleanly burned in place of natural gas or converted into fuel cells used like batteries for electric vehicles. The fuel cells react with oxygen to produce energy, with water as the only byproduct. Producing the gas requires electricity to split water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen atoms, called

electrolysis

. The entire process is

emission-free

when hydrogen producers power the

electrolyzers

with renewable energy. Currently, producing green hydrogen is expensive but presents a massive opportunity for sustainable energy.
