The market hobbled lower today without much major news for the holiday week. Markets will be closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving.
The country faces a potentially crippling railroad strike in two weeks.
The largest railroad union rejected contract proposals today, setting up further negotiations. About 30% of the nation's freight cargo moves by train, which could be shut down entirely if no deal is finalized.
China's still struggling to control covid with its zero-tolerance policies.
The country has been implementing strict lockdowns to battle contagion, which have stifled economic growth. Last week, China unveiled several new policies to reduce the economic impacts of covid restrictions and support the real estate market. Today, China reported its first covid deaths in months.

🤓 Inside Scoop...
Federal
antitrust laws
are designed to increase economic competition by limiting the market power of any one company or small group of companies (aka a trust). The
Federal Trade Commission
, and sometimes the
Justice Department,
are tasked with monitoring pricing practices and collusion between major corporations to break up
monopolies
and other anti-competitive power structures. Regulators review all corporate mergers and acquisitions to ensure newly-formed companies won't limit competition in a way that harms consumers with less choice or higher prices.
