Big Picture

Markets didn't do much today. Investors are focused on Thursday's inflation data, expecting to see continued rising prices. Decreasing prices would be a positive surprise.
Consumers are expecting less inflation.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's September consumer survey showed a significant drop in the expected inflation rate one year out but a slight rise in longer-term expectations. Inflation expectations are important because when businesses expect rising costs, they raise prices, and the cycle perpetuates.
Small business optimism edged up last month
, but still sits below average, according to the National Federation of Independent Business. Costs are still rising, and it's hard to find staff.
Corporate earnings season starts soon.
