Markets fell slightly to kick off the short week. Holiday weeks usually mean fewer traders at their desks and more volatile markets. Retail companies from Home Depot and Lowe's to Macy's and Kohl's reported strong profits and high consumer demand last week, despite rising prices. Investors are trying to figure out whether consumers will start refusing the higher prices before the corporate supply costs come down, eating into profits. President Biden nominated Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to continue holding his post. It's a welcome sign of policy continuity. Investors don't like surprises or uncertainty.

🤓 Inside Scoop...
An Initial Public Offering (IPO), aka "going public," refers to the first time a company asks us regular people to invest. Before that, you had to know somebody or have a ton of money to get behind the red rope. They sell shares of their company to the open market in exchange for our cash. Companies can use that cash for all sorts of things, typically to build out their business further. It also makes it easy for any previous investor or early employee to sell their existing shares on the market.
