Markets turned positive today on economic optimism. Consumer spending seems to be resilient against higher prices. Despite inflation at 6.2%, the Census Bureau reported that consumer retail spending is up 16%. President Biden authorized spending $1.2T on fixing our national infrastructure, things like roads, bridges, railroads, ports, water, and broadband. Rent for single-family homes rose 10% across the country in September, with the biggest increases in Miami.

Inflation is the reason we can't buy a coke for 25 cents anymore. It's a measure of the rate of decline in purchasing power of our dollars. Rising prices are not inherently bad. It's a natural part of a healthy, growing economy. If prices were to move the other way, and our dollars bought more stuff the longer we waited, we would have a greater incentive to hold our dollars instead of spending them. That would send the economy into major trouble. Right now, investors are worried about inflation getting too high and prices rising too quickly. We want the economy warm, but not hot.
